Who the fuck is ?mark

Mark Hamilton, the man behind ?mark, has finally assembled something of a little personal gem of an album that he’s been handing out on burnt cds in plastic sleeves. A dear friend of mine, I did a brief interview with him asking him a few questions about his inspirations, his approach to music, and what he’s got going on right now and in the future.
S: Alright, who is ?Mark.
?M: The elusive one, escaped mental patient, abstract soldier, basically a bugged out cracker who loves digging for records.
What’s the most recent gem you’ve picked up?
African Dub, Vol. 1
For your own album, have you settled on a title?
Who the fuck is ?mark
What does it sound like?
I think it’s just a funk fusion album that’s heavily inspired by real hip hop producers.
Tell me a bit about the process?
Its really simple, I chop the records in audacity, make all the beats on the roland SP404 sampler and do all the sequencing in Garage Band, 95% of the sounds come from records I found, and each track is a collage of at least 10 different sources. I make my own beaks, I don’t sample entire drum breaks.
Process aside, what’s your approach to a song?
Discipline. Making beats is therapy for me because I certainly have trouble dealing with all the evil mentalities, I make music or I’m brought down by evil interests.
Musically, what is love?
When all the politics melt away and everyone loses control collectively.
Who or what are yours main sources of inspiration?
My mom, dad, and sister. No doubt.
Musically?
Dj Premier made me want to make beats, Madlib made me realize I could. For this album it was really just those real hip hop producers like Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, the whole DITC, Dilla, Rza, El-p, etc…
Tell me a bit about the new album, “who the fuck is ?mark”
I’m a little confused about what it is myself. I guess what I can say is that its drum music, bass music is really big these days, I love it to death, but my stuff still focuses more on drums than anything.
You’re doing something on the 27th?
My first DJ gig in over 2 years, my album release, positive vibes. Please, check all negative vibes at the door.
?mark – Stillism [mp3]
Details for the ?mark album launch night: Friday February 27th at the Global Village down at Spadina and King St. For more information about the album or the night, contact getonthegoodfoot (at) gmail.com
Sensoria Presents – BRUNCH (The Morning After) // Coffee // Orange Juice

Good enough to dance with us,
Good enough to dine with us!
-
Lets get together Sunday morning (so like 2pm) for BRUNCH! Cheers to shaking off our hang overs, filling up our bellies, wiping the crust from our eyes, and telling tall tales of the night before.
I don’t know where we’ll go, or how many we’ll be, I guess we vote on it here.
Yih yih!
Taste – One of the senses for our sensoria.
E-mail me at sidenote (at) sensoria . me for details if you want to come or check out the facebook details. There may be a lot of people so maybe we’ll find a place thats dense in Brunch joints and take over the neighborhood.
Last Temptation for pints, pool, and free foosball afterwards.
Electric Sound Basement Shout

Steve does things like, pretend a subway station is a petting zoo! I love him.
Our super spectacular Sensoria friend Guy Stevos plugged our party away on his CIUT 89.5 show yesterday and even put up our flyer on his blog. Guy Stevos has been doing the Electric Sound Basement for six years, a show he started at CFRC in Kingston when he was just a Queens Film undergraduate student. Steve actually gave me my first gig back in 2003 on his radio show. There was no slipmats to be had at the station, so I had to use rubber mats! Imagine trying to cue records on that when you’re already nervous and sweating? We talked a fair bit about the drum n bass scene in Toronto and its inability to dish praise out to its locals. It’s nice to know Toronto is giving more respect and love to its locals than ever before, in every scene.
Check out his show every Tuesday from 5-6pm EST CIUT 89.5 online or if you have one and are in Toronto, a radio!!

DEC 6. TORONTO
SENSORIA invites you back to the Augusta House on December 6th for an unforgettable evening promising sensational bass and eye-widening visuals. The night showcases a dual album launch party for Philadelphian grime don Starkey’s “Ephemeral Exhibits (out on Planet µ, Nov. 24th) and rising Torontonian artist ill.gates’ “Autopirate” (out this fall on Muti Music) with both Dubslingers and Subtrac representing Toronto bass music scene in full force.

STARKEY (Planet µ – Trouble & Bass)
“I operate on the fringes of dubstep, like Vex’d, Darkstar and Joker. So much music nowadays lacks melodies, that’s why I stick out I think.”

Starkey is undoubtably Philidelphia’s finest dubstep / grime / bass artist and the latest signing to Planet µ. In the 2008 grime and dubstep arena, Starkey is a gleaming bright anomaly. Whereas so many producers’ default mode is darkness and gloom, Starkey’s music is saturated with upbeat colour, and through melody he harnesses a powerful, alien rave energy seldom heard enough. His latest remarkable beats are definitely going to get you bouncing and we’re excited to have him here in Toronto. Recently, he was featured on BBC Radio One through the Mary Anne Hobbs’ “Bass Generation” show – a huge honour. For a monthly dose, be sure to check out the show he hosts on “Seclusiasis Radio” every 1st monday of the month on SubFM.

BOMBAMAN (Subtrac, LoDubs)
Also known as Matt Carl, the other 1/2 of Toronto’s groundbreaking dubstep duo Loetech w/ fellow production wizard XI. Co-hosting their weekly “Streamizm” radio show Tuesdays 9pm – 11pm EST, Bombaman has dropped 4/4 electro-tinged sub-bass bombs on Lo Dubs, Aufect Recordings, and Dubplatelet, with upcoming releases slated from LA Dubstep Nostra, Lo Dubs and Badman Press. With his original tunes played on the regular by luminaries from Diplo to Rusko and Trouble & Bass, his in-demand remixing skills have subvertized hot product from Syntonics, Alias, Egyptrixx, DZ, Solvent, Alias and Times Neue Roman.
SEK ONE (Subtrac, Curbcrawlers)
Serving up puffy-doughed dubstep wobblers, blissed-out minimal techno delicacies and sugar-shocked microwave popcorn, Brandon Smith’s Subtrac-affiliated dubstep alter-ego wears many chef’s hats well. Self-proclaimed “genre-agnostic” yet devout sound missionary preaching a taste-making techno gospel via his influential blog thecurbcrawlers.com and its associate fine-tuned dance events and web-esthetics.
JAWBONE (Dubslingers)
Pacifist killa soundboy DJ-producer of ragga-jungle since 1995. Founding resident of Dubslingers and host of Toronto’s longest-running weekly dubstep event, Thymeless Wednesdays, you must by now know Grant McKeown. Respected for his tried-and-true commitment to community-building, Jawbone is renowned for his signature ragga-dubstep sound influenced by heavy amen d’n'b with rich roots-reggae bass, melodic vocals and aggro-toasting. He treads softly in camouflage while wielding a big heart and a deep crate to wax you philosophically. A ladies’ gentleman and a rudeboy’s artillerist, Jawbone is stag, wedding, and apocalypse now.
